Reminder: Deadline to Apply for or Amend Initial CERS Applications Fast Approaching
Eligible businessowners are reminded that April 22, 2021 is the deadline to file an application for the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) in respect of the first qualifying period or to amend any election previously made in respect of that period.
As background, the CERS subsidizes certain commercial real estate expenses of businesses negatively affected by COVID-19. To qualify, an eligible businessowner must – among other things – file a prescribed application before a particular statutory deadline. Read our detailed blog post on the CERS here.
For CERS claims, there is a “rolling” deadline of 180 days after the end of the particular qualifying period. Therefore, April 22, 2021 is the deadline to file a CERS application for the first qualifying period in respect of which the CERS was available – that is, September 27, 2020 to October 24, 2020. That statutory deadline also applies to amending or revoking previously-filed CERS elections.
