Mathew is an associate practicing in the firm’s Vancouver office.

Mathew’s practice focuses on Canadian commodity tax matters, including the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), Goods and Services Tax (GST), provincial sales taxes (PST), and various other taxes, duties, and levies. In this context, he has advised a broad range of clients, including Fortune 500 companies, on matters involving significant exposure, from planning and structuring before issues arise to resolving disputes when they do.

He has assisted clients with tax disputes across multiple Canadian jurisdictions at all stages of the dispute resolution process, including judicial reviews, audits, loss determinations, notices of objection, notices of appeal, and settlement negotiations. Mathew has also prepared tax recovery and risk-mitigation initiatives, including administrative interpretation and ruling requests, voluntary disclosure applications, rebate and refund claims, taxpayer relief requests, and similar applications across Canadian jurisdictions.

Before joining Thorsteinssons, Mathew worked for a leading taxation software company, as well as the affiliate law firm of a Big Four accounting firm and served as a clinician with the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic and the Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts.
