John R. Owen is of Counsel in Thorsteinssons’ Toronto office.
John retired as a Justice of the Tax Court of Canada in 2024 having served on that Court for over ten years. As a Justice of the Tax Court of Canada, John heard a wide variety of appeals under the Income Tax Act and Part IX of the Excise Tax Act (GST/HST) including appeals involving transfer pricing, foreign affiliates, financial services, scientific research and experimental development, tax treaties, mining and the general anti-avoidance rule.
Prior to being appointed to the Tax Court of Canada, John advised public corporations on a wide range of complex Canadian domestic and international income tax issues including with respect to business structuring and restructuring, insolvency related restructuring, and mergers and acquisitions. John also appeared as co-counsel before the Tax Court of Canada, the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
